I can't get too excited about how things turn out on awards shows. Like elections: I know who I want to win, I'm occasionally inspired by an acceptance speech, and very occasionally by the entertainment.
But the fashions keep me watching.
In the spirit of one who has had her share of style faux pas, I offer these impressions on last night's red carpet:
Julianne Moore - Indecision '11 or "Two Sleeve or Not Two Sleeve"
Tilda Swinton - Introducing the Fashion Mullet: business on the top, party on the bottom
MIchelle Williams - Flower child meets shower-curtain
Sandra Bullock - Identity Crisis
Olivia Wilde - Tulle Bully, or Monetpoly
Heidi Klum - Project Tasteless
Christina Aguilera - Wilde West meets Mae West
Jennifer Love Hewitt - satinjazzled
Helena Bonham Carter - HBC on LSD
Christina Hendricks - putting the bomb in "bombshell"
Lea Michelle - Beverly Hills Prom
Annette Benning - Geek chic
Favorite quote of the evening: David Fincher thanking the production teams and saying
"without them, I'd be just a bitter man with a lot of opinions." What a classy, intelligent man.
Runner up favorite: the short and genuine prepared speech by the kid from GLEE.
Least favorite segment: The Deniro tribute. A bizarre concept from start to finish, beginning with Matt Damon's death by comedy as an intro; continuing with an incomplete montage of film clips, and ending with Deniro delivering a bad Borscht Belt routine. Nothing says desparate/over the hill like an actor trying too hard to be entertaining. Such a misdirection of a great actor.
Second least favorite moment: Gervais presenting the representative of the Hollywood Foreign Press before he had to come on with a combo of toilet humor and ageism.
